5 Signs Your Small Business Website Is Due for a Refresh

June 4, 2026 //  by ellen//  Leave a Comment

Chris Property Management website designed by Ellen MorseYour website is often the first impression potential customers have of your business. While your company may have grown and evolved over the years, your website may not have kept pace. Many business owners assume they need a completely new website when something feels off. In reality, a strategic refresh can often make a significant difference in how your business is perceived online.

Here are five signs it may be time to take a fresh look at your website

1. Visitors Can’t Quickly Understand What You Do

Most visitors decide within a few seconds whether they’re in the right place. If your website doesn’t clearly explain what you do, who you help, potential customers may leave before taking the next step. One of the biggest misconceptions about websites is that more information is better. In reality, too much information, industry jargon, or unclear messaging can make it harder for visitors to understand your value. That’s why I use the Story Brand framework developed by Donald Miller in every website project. This proven framework helps create a clear message that positions your customer as the hero and your business as the guide. When visitors can quickly answer these questions, they’re much more likely to become customers:

  • What does this business do?
  • Is it for someone like me?
  • How can they help me?
  • What should I do next?

A beautiful website can attract attention, but clear messaging is what turns visitors into inquiries.

2. Your Website No Longer Reflects Your Brand

Businesses change over time. If your website still reflects where your business was several years ago, it may be sending the wrong message to potential customers today. A recent example is Empire State Lifestyle Solutions.

The site needed to be elegant, professional, and showcase the personalized experience ESLS provides to their clients. I used Showit to design the website, create the messaging, and design a beautiful visual presence. The website aligns with the quality-of-service ESLS delivers to its clients everyday.

Have you added new services? Expanded your offerings? Shifted your focus? As businesses grow, websites often get left behind.

When I redesigned the website for Chris Property Maintenance in Squarespace, one of the primary goals was to create a clear experience that better showcased the company’s current services and made information easier for customers to find.

The Square space design also allows CPM to easily update the site moving forward.

If your website doesn’t accurately reflect what your business offers today, it may be time for an update.

3. It Doesn’t Look Great on Mobile

This is a non-negotiable. Most website visitors are viewing your site on a phone before they ever see it on a desktop computer. If visitors have to zoom in to read text, struggle to navigate your menu, or can’t quickly find important information, they may leave before learning more about your business. A website should provide a seamless experience across all devices and make it easy for visitors to take action, whether they’re browsing from a phone, tablet, or computer.

4. Your Website Isn’t Generating Leads

Your website should do more than exist online—it should help turn visitors into customers. If you’re getting website traffic but not receiving inquiries, contact form submissions, or consultation requests, your website may not be guiding visitors toward action.

A clear call to action in a well-designed website should work as a member of your team, helping potential customers understand your services, build trust in your business, and take action when they’re ready. If your website isn’t helping generate leads, it may be time to revisit both the design and the messaging.

5. You’re embarrassed to share your site

This is the gut check that it’s time for a change. If you find yourself stammering when sharing your site, or offering a disqualifier that certain sections aren’t relevant or accurate anymore, then you need to refresh your site. Remember, a website refresh doesn’t always mean starting over. Refreshing your website isn’t always about a complete redesign. Sometimes a few strategic updates to your messaging, branding, content, and user experience can make a significant impact. If you’ve been wondering whether your website still reflects your business, I’d love to help you evaluate what’s working, what’s outdated, and where a refresh could make the biggest difference.
