Betting on Yourself: Lessons from my son

Bet on yourself handlettering designed by Ellen Morse

I recently created this hand lettering piece because these words kept ringing in my head: “Bet on Yourself.” It’s the message my son heard in high school from the JUCO (Junior College) coach where he ended up playing baseball this past year.

He played three sports in high school and enjoyed them all, but we had a very practical approach and didn’t engage in any special showcases or camps. He didn’t receive any recruiting interest from bigger college programs during his high school years. His coach urged him to go the JUCO route, to “Bet on himself” and to believe in his potential. Fast forward to this past July and the fruits of his labor paid off. It felt like God was smiling down upon him because he was drafted in the 18th round by the Texas Rangers!

The journey my son embarked on holds valuable lessons for all of us. It’s a story of perseverance, self-belief, and betting on oneself.

Betting on Your Business

So, how does this apply to you and your business? For me, it’s that moment when I get quiet and listen to my inner voice. It’s about learning to dig deep and silence the inner critic that often holds me back. Perhaps for you, it’s the naysayers around you who aren’t building you up. I encourage you to find a new tribe, one that believes in your potential and encourages your growth. Whatever your situation, the key message here is to bet on yourself, trust your instincts, and never stop believing.

Silence the Inner Critic

In the world of entrepreneurship, self-doubt is a common companion. We often hear the whispers of the inner critic, telling us that we’re not good enough, that we’re not cut out for this, or that success is reserved for others.

Silencing the inner critic starts with acknowledging its existence. Understand that self-doubt is a natural part of the process, but it doesn’t have to define you. Recognize that your dreams and goals are worth pursuing. When you bet on yourself and your ideas, you’re taking the first step toward turning those dreams into reality. And, don’t be afraid to pivot when your goals or dreams change. For me, I’ve been on this entrepreneurial journey for over 14 years now, long enough to know there are going to be bumps in the road.

Surround Yourself with Believers

My son’s journey wouldn’t have been possible without the support and belief of his coaches — and of course, his family :). The people we surround ourselves with have a profound impact on our growth and success. If you find that the people around you are not supportive or are actively discouraging your aspirations, it’s time to seek out a new group. A supportive community can provide the motivation and encouragement needed to overcome challenges and reach your goals.

Dreams Do Come True

My son’s story is a testament to the fact that dreams do come true. Despite the odds, he persevered and believed in his abilities. He worked each day to become better and let go of what he could not control.

In the world of business, the path to success is often fraught with challenges and uncertainties. However, it’s those who are willing to take a leap of faith, to trust their instincts, and to silence the inner critic that often achieve the most remarkable feats.

So, as you navigate the twists and turns of your entrepreneurial journey, remember to “Bet on Yourself.” Trust your gut, surround yourself with those who believe in you, and never stop believing in your dreams.

Ellen Morse’s blog post, “Betting on Yourself,” is a powerful reminder of the importance of self-belief and perseverance. She shares the inspiring journey of her son, who, despite not being heavily recruited in high school, chose the junior college route, worked diligently, and was eventually drafted by the Texas Rangers. This narrative underscores the value of trusting one’s instincts and putting in consistent effort.

Ellen draws parallels between her son’s experience and the entrepreneurial path. She emphasizes the need to silence the inner critic, trust one’s vision, and surround oneself with supportive individuals. Her message is clear: success often comes to those who are willing to take risks, remain persistent, and believe in their potential.

For anyone navigating the challenges of business or personal growth, Ellen’s insights serve as a motivating call to action: bet on yourself, stay committed, and keep pushing forward.
